Sequins? Of course. Sequins on your elbows? Why, yes, thank you. Sequin heart shapes? Oh my goodness. That’s what we’re doing today–DIY sequin heart patches! I was a little nervous about this project and kept putting it on the back burner. I thought it would be too hard make heart shapes with sequins. But I was wrong!! It’s so easy. And fun. And simple. I chose gold sequins but red, pink, rainbow, they’d all be pretty. And you could make pins for your lapel or hair, or add these to cute gift bags.
Tip: I know sequin trim can be expensive. Keep your eyes open for sequin trim at the Dollar Spot at Target. I bought packs of gold and black over Christmas, $1.00 per pack. Plenty for a small project like this!
Materials
- Sequin trim
- Scissors
- Felt
- Heart template (look online or cut your own freehand; I used a Paper Source paper heart from my craft stash)
- Glue (try Fabric-tac; I used Aileene’s craft glue and it worked well, but it took a long time to dry)
- Needle
- Thread (quilting or embroidery)
- Sweater/blazer, clothing you want to attach patch to (mine is from Target)
Basic Idea
Using your template, trace and cut two heart shapes out of felt.
Start at the bottom of the heart and carefully wind the sequins up to the top in rows, gluing in sections. It’s a bit like a snake. Place glue on a section of the heart and then adhere the rows of sequins. (Don’t worry too much about making sure the edges are straight—we’ll glue a piece of trim around the edge of the heart to complete it.) Layer them a little so there are no gaps. You don’t want to see the felt. At the top, continue the rows on one side to the top and cut and secure the end to the felt. Start with a new sequin piece and complete the other side of the heart in a similar way.
Starting at the bottom of the heart again, glue a piece of trim around the edge. This gives it a nice, polished look. Let dry. Then check for loose pieces and glue down.
Once completely dry, try on your sweater and mark where you want the patches to go with washi tape. I marked an “X” right on my elbow.
Using the tape guides, pin the patches to your sweater. Be careful to pin it to one layer Hand sew around the edge, taking time to sew underneath the sequins so you can’t see the thread.
I’d recommend hand washing your clothing items. I’m happy with how the heart patches turned out! I love that little bit of sparkle. Mission accomplished.
I’d love to see your sequin projects! Tag me over on Instagram @kristiejcain and share them with me! xo
OH MY GOODNESS! This is so cute!! I also picked up a few of those packs and have been waiting to use them for something. I think I have an old cardigan I can re-vamp with these cute little hearts! Thanks friend!
Thanks, lady! It really spruced up my old Target sweater. 😉 I want to make some more in other colors!
